The Gold Rush Town of Stockton Continues to Boom
Nine years of before Custer's last stand became the stuff of legends, 29 men of vision created the Stockton Savings and Loan Society, an institution that would withstand the tests of the next 140 years. Just as the Founding Fathers had pledged their "lives and fortunes", so did these Stockton businessmen pledge $100,000 in gold coin of their own fortunes. In the wake of America's terrible Civil War and the economic havoc it had wrought, on August 12, 1867, the bank opened its doors for business. Today, we know Stockton Savings and Loan Society simply as the Bank of Stockton. The values and community leadership that those 29 men exhibited 140 year ago continue to be an integral part of the Bank of Stockton today, and into the future.

Stockton and the Bank Continue to Prosper
For the first 20 years following the founding of the Bank of Stockton, the city continue to grow and prosper as the shipping and transportation hub of the fertile San Joaquin Valley. The 1880s saw the construction of a new courthouse in Stockton, along with a great Agriculture Pavilion, monuments to the city's prosperity and importance. As agricultural products flowed out of Stockton's port day after day, bricks and lumber poured in as construction boomed and the city expanded in all directions.

The Bank Build's Stockton's First Skycraper
By the turn of the 20th century, Stockton Savings and Loan Society had outgrown its location in the McKee building. In 1903 the bank acquired the Arcade property on the northeast corner of Main and San Joaquin Streets and began construction of an 8 story skyscraper. This building would remain the bank's headquarters for the next half century. Along with the bank, the building also became the home of Yosemite Club, one of the oldest clubs in California. To this day, the club continues to occupy the top floor of the bank building.
