We mean that. Although we belong to one of the strongest and most capable regional banking networks in the U.S., we consider ourselves first and foremost members of this community.
That means our customers are not just account numbers or voices on the phone to us. You buy groceries where we do. Your kids play soccer with our kids.
Financial challenges are more complex these days, but we're ready to give you the personal help and attention you need. We consider it a privilege to serve our customers. If you are not currently an AFB&T customer and are looking for a new financial services provider, we encourage you to give us a try. Our success has been built on lasting relationships which we are sure you will enjoy!
FB&T is committed to being the finest financial services company in the world. A lofty goal for a company who in 1929 started as the Mutual Building and Loan Association with just one office located on the corner of Washington Street and College Avenue in downtown Athens. The company, built on a foundation of values, became chartered in 1933 by the federal government as Athens Federal Savings and Loan Association. In 1984, a public offering of stock in Athens Federal was held and Athens Federal, with the assistance of new banking laws, entered the consumer and commercial lending business along with the traditional mortgage lending.
Athens Federal became Athens First Bank & Trust Company, a Georgia state-chartered
commercial bank, in 1991 when purchased by Synovus Financial Corporation. At the time of the Synovus purchase, Athens First became the first bank in Georgia to convert from a savings and loan charter to a full service, state-chartered commercial bank. Synovus, a Columbus, Georgia based holding company, operates independent banking affiliates across Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee and AFB&T is now one of the largest Synovus affiliates.
The largest bank in Athens-Clarke County, AFB&T has grown from the Mutual Building and
Loan Association in 1929 to Athens First in Clarke and its surrounding counties to Augusta
First in the newly entered Augusta market and incorporates the legal name AFB&T to alleviate the confusion. AFB&T serves eight markets in Georgia which include: Athens, Augusta, Commerce, Dacula, Hartwell, Lavonia, Monroe and Oconee.
The names have changed, the bank has grown but the continuity of service to the communities has been a defining characteristic of AFB&T for more than three quarters of a century. The success of AFB&T is in many ways attributable to the leadership and guidance of four chief executives: Howard H. McWhorter nurtured and developed the bank from its inception to 1964; Julius F. Bishop became McWhorter’s successor in 1964; and in 1983, James “Jimbo†L. LaBoon, Jr. took control. Today’s CEO/ President, J. William “Bill†Douglas, Jr., succeeded James LaBoon on February 1, 2002.
AFB&T, through its 17 branches and network of 24 ATMs, provides a full range of banking
services throughout northeast Georgia and Augusta. Voted ‘Best Bank’ by the Athens-Banner Herald’s Reader’s Choice poll for five consecutive years and winner of a national Keep America Beautiful Award for the bank’s 75th anniversary tree planting project, AFB&T is committed to providing outstanding service to the customers it serves while remaining a leader in corporate stewardship.
